Work Experience

January 2007 - Present:
Vonage Holdings Corp. (Postgres Database Administrator). Preside over a 2TB environment of 170 DBs on 30 server hosts. Identify, propose and successfully campaign for large-scale improvements in security, growth management and performance. Worked through resistance from other functional units, when necessary.

Facilitate out-sourced ETL development project that integrates 5 key databases on 3 platforms (EnterpriseDB, Oracle and MySQL). Provided essential input and direction to guide a team of 70 developers through approx 12 points of contact. Train and mentor new DBA in EnterpriseDB/Postgres technology. Train developers and report writers in large dataset query strategies. Reverse-engineer and re-implement several poor performing DB reports to realize much better overall performance on existing hardware.

Constructed centralized process management system for quick and accurate deployment of large scale configuration changes, backups, replication, partition generation and automated status monitoring. Studied growth trends of business data, proposed and implemented archival and/or purging when appropriate. Identified aspects of certain databases where partitioning strategies are needed to allow sustainable growth without compromising performance.

Wrote technical documentation for detailing new and existing procedures on managed systems.

December 2005 - January 2007:
JobFlash Inc. (Production Database Administrator). Managed 24/7 production environment for busy online recruitment service on Postgres 8 / Solaris 9. Applied data modeling best practice to retrofit constraints and foreign keys to large existing (400+ table DB). Managed deployment of new DB code using thorough knowledge of MVCC in order to determine when and when not to make changes to live system. Created runtime statistics and analysis system tailored to specific company needs and to identify and troubleshoot long-standing performance and reliability problems. Implemented 2 flavors of database replication based upon Slony-1 and Postgres native PITR using "warm standby" feature developed in house. Optimized complex queries and/or aided development team in same. Handled frequent periodic software upgrades to custom application. Identified and removed large number of useless objects in DB left behind from years of lax administration. Created multilevel user role system and schemas to add structure to the legacy and monolithic DB layout. Also supported development, QA and staging systems and users of same systems. Organized existing cron jobs and added new ones for greatly improved automation and did so using an intelligent framework which suppresses excessive emailed status output.

September 2000 - December 2005:
Independent consultant. Specializing in website backend architecture, database modeling and implementation. Developed a financial data analysis system using Python, Postgres RDBMS and FIX protocol for aggressive US equities market traders. Extensively tested and tuned for optimal performance on a high-traffic database. Designed and built website RDBMS backend for a membership system with merchant account gateway, downloadable resources, SQL reporting, 3-tier user roles, etc. Designed and built an online fund raising system with participant registration, sponsor pledges, teams, merchant transactions and reporting, for a large NY based charity. Administered a distributed system of Linux servers for HIPAA file transfer. Reviewed new Redhat patch releases and installed same periodically. Architected, developed and maintained a high-security FTP media distribution system utilizing hard linked files for space efficiency and auto-delete feature to prevent multiple downloads of same file. Configured and maintained Linux/IPTables firewall routers, Apache web servers and mail gateways.

June 1997 - August 2000:
UniSoft Consulting on contract to Aon Corporation (Senior OLTP systems engineer). Lead consultant/admin responsible for a high-availability server hosting Oracle and Peoplesoft financials and HR apps. Handled new machine purchases, equipment lease and support contract administration. Provided interactive, effective technical support for all UNIX and peer systems in a production environment. Traveled abroad to supervise deployment of regional database servers. Conducted software evaluations. Setup and configured hardware ranging from workstations up to twenty-CPU Sun Enterprise 6500 Servers. Implemented performance data collection system with reporting to be used for capacity planning and performance trouble shooting tasks.

August 1996 - June 1997:
UniSoft Consulting on contract to William M. Mercer Corporation (Senior Client/Server System Administrator). Managed a group of 16 HPUX servers and workstations used for development and production of Sybase DB application. Performed hands-on technical support of hardware and software. Tuned and optimized Unix OS runtime kernel configuration. Migrated and consolidated a large number of legacy applications to increase efficiency of leased equipment. Enable the company to obsolete and return several machines thereby saving costs.
